Florida Migrant Advisory Council Meeting

The third meeting of the Florida Migrant Parent Advisory Council (FMPAC) for the 2016-2017 school year took place at the Rosen Centre Hotel in Orlando, Florida on February 17 & 18, 2017. Dahlia Peña welcomed members and called the meeting to order, thirteen members attended. The agenda and minutes from the previous meeting were approved. The next meeting is schedule for April 29 & 30, 2017 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel.

Dr. Pouncey talked about the state tests for students in kindergarten to twelfth grades. She stated that Florida State Standards are content standards that identify the expectations for what the student needs to and is able to do.

Dr. Pouncey gave a presentation that focused on parents as teacher/role models of their children, along with some parenting tips.

Ms. Ziemba gave a workshop on how parents can help their children become better readers. The program is easily learned and scientifically developed for parents to use with their children who have reading problems.

Ms. Silva-Johnson gave a presentation on the ability to identify their emotions. She talked about how to react and how to respond. She gave members different strategies to train their emotional intelligence.

Accessing Parent Portal

Lucia Valdivia, Putnam County Representative
Mr. Altamirano along with Ms. Valdivia presented on how to access the parent portal. The portal is simply a computer system used by school districts to maintain grading and attendance information.
