Parent Conference

The second meeting for the Florida Migrant Parent Advisory Council (FMPAC) for the 2013-2014 school year took place at the Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, Florida on December 6 & 7, 2013. Dr. Maria Pouncey welcomed members and called the meeting to order. There were 13 members present. There were two new parent representatives added to the board, Rosa Flores from Polk County, and Maricela Paniagua from Palm Beach County. All members introduced themselves during the icebreaker activity. Agenda and minutes where reviewed and approved.

Presentation: Roxana Bruiget from the Family Network on Disabilities gave a presentation on the principal of Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). She also talked to them about the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and went more into more detail on Senate Bill 1108.

Sigfredo Rodriguez from the Panhandle Area Education Consortium gave a presentation on Email and Password Security. He spoke on the importance of creating a more complex password. Complex passwords help prevent various security issues like identity theft.

Sara Hamill, a teacher for the Migrant Education Program, presented on Parent Teacher Collaboration from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF). She shared on how parents can prepare for a parent teacher conference. She also talked about her experiences working with migrant students and families.

Dr. Maria Pouncey, FMPAC Coordinator, pre-sented on the subject of "Copycats" from the Parenting Counts Curriculum. She stated that par-ents are their child's first teacher. She reminded everyone that children look, listen and learn from us.

Before the closing of the meeting, members gave their own presentations. Each member gave a presentation on what they are doing in their districts. The presentations were very informative .
