Florida Migrant Advisory Council Meeting

The fourth meeting of the Florida Migrant Parent Advisory Council (FMPAC) for the 2015-2016 school year took place at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando, Florida on April 8 & 9, 2016. Elizabeth Ochoa welcomed members and called the meeting to order. Ten members attended. The agenda and minutes from the previous meeting were approved.

Marijuana: Facts Parents Should Know. Presenters: Laura Beltran and Maria Segura. Ms. Beltran and Ms. Segura talked about what marijuana is, the effects, why young people use it, how a parent can tell if their child is using it, and how to prevent their child from using it.

Mental Health/Suicide Prevention for Teens. Presenter: Dr. Ana Oliver, FSU College of Medicine. Dr. Oliver shared the factors and strategies on prevention. She also talked about the 5 signs of depression, which are: (1) sadness, hopelessness, (2) low grades, (3) loss of pleasure sense, (4) over sleep or lack of sleep, and (5) change in appetite.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA)/Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA). Presenter: Aisha N. Chaney, Immigration lawyer. Ms. Chaney gave the definitions, requirements and a step by step review of each action.

Legislative Updates 2016 and FLDOE Parent Checklist. Presenter: Maria Pouncey, FMPAC Coordinator. Dr. Pouncey provided an update on what is happening at the legislative level and handed out a Parent Checklist from the Florida Department of Education.

Computer Training. Presenter: Isaac Altamirano, PAEC Migrant Technical Assistant. Mr. Altamirano guided members through creating a Zoom account and videoconferencing setup. During this process, he explained how to access the program and how to download it to any device.
